00:00:00:

00:00:06: Pascal-Julie Robinson, you're from Canada?

00:00:10: Montreal.

00:00:11: Yes I live in Montreal...I would say like North Shore of Montreal so it's a city called Laval but you can see Montreal, Quebec

00:00:20: and Canada.

00:00:21: Okay So more the French part

00:00:23: Exactly!

00:00:24: My first speaking language is French.

00:00:29: That's why i have little accent in English And Im trying to learn Dutch.

00:00:34: That's pretty cool.

00:00:35: But it is not easy?

00:00:37: Yeah,

00:00:37: I believe that.

00:00:39: German is a hard game!

00:00:40: It was very big challenge but i'm working on it.

00:00:44: Well thats great.

00:00:45: so French, German and then English of course.

00:00:49: anyway Pascal you've been an osteopath for over twenty years now

00:00:55: yeah

00:00:56: And you specialized in working with kids.

00:01:00: Yeah, I would say that since the beginning of my practice almost... ...I started working with babies.

00:01:08: It was not necessarily my choice at the beginning because when i was a student in osteopathy.. ..I thought that I'd be more involved in sports therapy and then I was doing a lot of sport at the moment.

00:01:21: so that's what it feels like to practice.

00:01:26: And my first job as an osteopath was in a medical clinic for pregnant women.

00:01:34: So I received a lot of pregnant woman and my practice, then their babies.

00:01:41: So yeah, I discovered something that i didn't plan to go for.

00:01:47: Yeah most of the time like... Exactly!

00:01:51: The life just gets you where it should be.

00:01:55: because twenty years later It's a real pleasure For me To work with babies kids teenagers.

00:02:04: so..it was good path for Me but i didnt knew at the Time.

00:02:09: Okay, but there are a lot of athletic aspects with children as well.

00:02:13: Exactly!

00:02:14: So

00:02:15: I realized that it's funny you mentioned that because in my first years of practice... I say okay like babies or little athletes

00:02:26: and

00:02:26: they have the common point between athletes and baby their mother skills acquisition all growth is going through.

00:02:38: so Yes, so finally if you love working with athletes I think You can Love Working With Babies.

00:02:48: So maybe more just with the Neurological System as well because that's what you address

00:02:56: Maybe?

00:02:57: Yeah, because when we're talking about the modern skills acquisition We are a lot talking about nervous system The growth of the nervous system and the maturation.

00:03:09: And they were changing so much in their first years.

00:03:12: They've been moving all this time.

00:03:16: So yeah, little athletes One of them will become an athlete

00:03:21: as well.

00:03:24: Okay, but that's almost the first question already.

00:03:28: Yeah So what fascinates you about working with children?

00:03:34: I would say It's like they.

00:03:41: They're really interesting In many ways.

00:03:45: i would see the first thing in my everyday practice it's always positive or most of the time very positive.

00:03:54: I liked working with adults, but you know it's not so easy.

00:03:58: The life today isn't so easy.

00:04:01: a lot of stress and anxiety.

00:04:04: Some adult are taking care of themselves.

00:04:09: So It is a lot that i am in pain, i have stress or anxiety.

00:04:17: At the end your day can be exhausted as therapist With babies completely different.

00:04:28: They are growing, they're changing...they want to learn and move.

00:04:33: every time you normalize a little restriction on the baby he's gonna use that mobility right away to move..to crawl ..to stand.

00:04:45: so it is very positive , they change really fast.

00:04:50: So You have really nice results.

00:04:53: So I would say at the beginning of your practice it can be very, very rewarding to see okay i did that with a baby and then next day he was crawling.

00:05:06: oh my god!

00:05:06: That's amazing.

00:05:09: And you go from surprises to surprise because like twenty years later they still surprised me Every day and sometimes I say oh my god, okay.

00:05:16: We can do that in osteopathy.

00:05:18: i didn't

00:05:19: know.

00:05:19: yeah That's good

00:05:21: Yeah.

00:05:22: so the positive way?

00:05:23: The energy that they're bringing into the treatment Into your life.

00:05:31: They communicate a lot And that always surprises me A lot too.

00:05:37: Um...They answer you question..they have reaction like They're not answering with words, but they are answering with their eyes.

00:05:48: With the movement... ...they also collaborate in treatment a very different way.

00:05:57: Yeah that's interesting because this would have been my next question How do they communicate when they just like four weeks old?

00:06:05: And what kind of answer is it?

00:06:08: It isn't blurred probably and its clear.

00:06:13: It's always surprising because when I was a student, we'll remember that day for the rest of my life.

00:06:20: Because... ...I did my study in Montreal and my teacher for pediatrics which is Denise Dufresne.

00:06:30: she was talking to babies a lot And back then you know?

00:06:35: I was like twenty-two years old!

00:06:37: I was looking at her and say oh my god She's talking with babies but They can't understand what is that exactly.

00:06:45: And then you see another baby and after many babies, they communicate.

00:06:54: so she was explaining to us back them not necessarily the words but the energy of the words.

00:07:07: So the way you're talking, your fascial expression.

00:07:13: The sound of your voice and yes they answer you.

00:07:18: so...the first thing I'm doing when i'm treating a baby is to ask them can I touch?

00:07:26: Can I touch your head or pelvis?

00:07:29: And sometimes we have a blink of eyes A little smile.

00:07:35: they're doing a movement.

00:07:38: They are responding in their own ways and showing us a lot of things.

00:07:46: You know the first time that you were working on your stomach as a baby?

00:07:49: And he placed his hands...on your hand!

00:07:52: Oh,

00:07:54: this is very special!

00:07:56: First times it's like a random movement.

00:07:59: Yes.

00:08:00: Then then second time A hundred times later you say no, this is not a random movement.

00:08:11: He wants to tell me something so You can feel the baby applying more pressure and then oh it's gonna take off your hand Doing some movements.

00:08:23: So most of time I see with babies when we're working as osteopaths We have easiest job on planet because they're doing all the work.

00:08:39: I'm there to be a full crumb, so i am gonna place my hands and then he's going move around.

00:08:45: do the movement.

00:08:50: It's great.

00:08:50: So you can address very exactly what they want and that is maybe the reason, I don't know why it works so well?

00:08:58: You know with adults... And its really okay.

00:09:01: we are working in this way.

00:09:03: but for example someone comes to your office with a lower back pain.

00:09:10: he says ok i have some pain on my back ,it goes down into my legs.

00:09:15: For sure!

00:09:17: You need keep them in mind Even if you assess that person and find it's not the left lower back, which is a problem but its right ankle.

00:09:29: If only touched your right ankle...

00:09:32: Right kicks in!

00:09:34: The client will say yeah my pain isn't on my back just touch my ankle because I need to touch where the pain is.

00:09:44: So it's more about socializing what they learned and yeah, their thinking.

00:09:49: this has to be like this

00:09:51: for example?

00:09:52: The baby won't say that.

00:09:55: so when I'm doing my assessment i think with babies in kids we're going a little bit more towards cause of dysfunction because influenced by the sign or symptoms, it's really my assessment and say okay yeah that is main cause.

00:10:20: so I am going to address this.

00:10:23: And now you can see all of these results in osteopathy by working on the main cause.

00:10:30: So yes... It amazes me all the time.

00:10:35: He was having reflux and finally I addressed the pelvis, uh...the cervical spine.

00:10:43: And the ankle and the re-reflux is gone!

00:10:47: Say oh my god what's happening here?

00:10:49: Yes..and maybe when an adult i would have go more directly to the symptoms that he was describing.

00:10:56: So do you think....I've read that you been too many places for teaching?

00:11:02: Yeah yeah Other differences between babies and the culture, just to add on that idea of working with a brain or maybe interacting with parents.

00:11:17: I would

00:11:18: say

00:11:21: it confirms me that communication is not about words because last May when i was in Brazil ,I don't speak Portuguese But I was communicating with them very easily.

00:11:37: When i'm treating babies here in the school, when im teaching... ...I don't speak German so I cannot really communicate but we still communicate very well.

00:11:49: So at the end We're all one big family and it's me-the parents-the baby.

00:11:59: We find a way to understand each other, and so it's very special because we've found different ways of communicating.

00:12:10: It confirms that he is going.

00:12:12: show me by his posture or movement how I place my hand on the body.

00:12:19: How do you react?

00:12:21: Sometimes they are smiling sometimes They cry, they can cry to express some emotion and yeah at the end.

00:12:31: so there's not a lot of difference in between the countries.

00:12:40: What complaints or problems do children most often come to you with?

00:12:45: I would say that when i started twenty years ago osteopath were well known for bones So neck problem, back problem.

00:13:00: Knees ankle shoulder but mainly the spine.

00:13:05: I think so for their babies it was a lot of flat head plagiosefali.

00:13:13: But now people realize that we're much more than that and It's funny because in my practice Since, I would say the pandemic.

00:13:23: So since the last five years... ...I'm having a lot of babies with breastfeeding issues.

00:13:30: It's becoming like my main practice, I will say Breastfeeding Issues and Digestive Issues.

00:13:39: And exactly Like at the beginning i didn't choose necessarily to work With kids For breastfeeding issues, it's like you receive a kid in consultation.

00:13:53: He has some breastfeeding issue.

00:13:56: You help him The mom is very satisfied and she will talk to

00:14:02: the other

00:14:03: Mom.

00:14:05: So from one person to another you have more of those kind clients In your office And then say okay Five years later, finally every day I had little babies with breastfeeding issues.

00:14:21: And yeah...I really appreciate that because you discovered a new field of osteopathy.

00:14:28: Well actually it's combining all the pregnant women and then breastfeeding so being all around.

00:14:38: Exactly, so because of that I'm seeing very young babies Because with breastfeeding issues you want to see them quite fast.

00:14:50: You can really help in the first days or week after they were born.

00:14:55: So like my clients are a lot between zero and one month And a lot of them with digestive issues, I would say the three and four months.

00:15:09: So maybe half my clients are from zero to three months for very small.

00:15:18: Do you think there even more people or babies that have breastfeeding issues than maybe hundred years ago?

00:15:27: I think that we're really aware of the importance of breastfeeding those days as a mom because my kids are now in their early twenties, so twenty years ago breastfeeding was.

00:15:45: We knew it was good, but not as much as we're doing today.

00:15:49: So the mom were breastfeeding for six months and then were switching to the cow meal quite fast And years after years this study showed us that it was really really good.

00:16:03: so there's There is a big change in the way that people are seeing breastfeeding now, so I think a lot of mom want to breastfed.

00:16:14: They want to be comfortable doing it and they don't wanna have pain.

00:16:19: A lot of nurses doctors Breastfeeding specialists Are aware what we can do in osteo.

00:16:26: So i have alot of reference from Doctors, Nurses From the hospital.

00:16:33: It's changing a lot at the moment.

00:16:35: So more women are breastfeeding, more professional or aware that sometimes the issue can come from the baby.

00:16:45: so osteopaths could be good tool to address this problem and we're more aware of the importance of breastfeeding being comfortable While breastfeeding and for a long period of time.

00:17:01: Yes, because if you want to be comfortable For a year You need some help

00:17:07: Absolutely.

00:17:08: And what are the most?

00:17:10: Problems for The babies.

00:17:13: not too get enough milk out of there,

00:17:16: you know When when you one you gave birth you have two you have a baby and more anxiety as a mom.

00:17:26: Yes, so I think

00:17:27: that a lot of moms are putting too much pressure on their shoulders And sometimes it's my fault i don't produce enough milk.

00:17:40: The milk was not there in the first days because Of the way the baby was born for different reasons.

00:17:46: So its alot of pressure from them.

00:17:48: but In...in clinical aspect, we see more issues coming from the babies.

00:17:58: So say if we have the babies were going to help them mom at the same time just think like is he able to open his mouth?

00:18:06: as simple as that you know?

00:18:08: He could add some compression While he was in his mom's belly or during the birth process.

00:18:17: So maybe a compression and it cannot open its mouth.

00:18:21: The way He places is lips Mm-hmm, so if you're not placing your lips properly Maybe You're not gonna latch properly?

00:18:31: Maybe you're going to have some gas.

00:18:33: so sometimes just give issues.

00:18:36: There are some fascia tension, news color tension that we can get rid of quite easily with little exercise at home and it can change really fast.

00:18:51: Sometimes you have a lack milk production but if the baby is not good enough is not going to stimulate the breast properly.

00:19:06: So it's always a reaction with the baby and the mom, both of them are involved in that process.

00:19:16: so I've heard many osteopaths recommend

00:19:23: yeah the tangtai cutting.

00:19:28: yes

00:19:29: we

00:19:29: have done a lot at Montreal And for some of them, or maybe it can be really good and very helpful.

00:19:39: For some of that will not change.

00:19:41: but my approach in my own office is to inform the parents.

00:19:48: there's a lot we should look at.

00:19:52: Yes!

00:19:53: We could consider cutting the thongtai.

00:19:57: Is the baby able to open his mouth?

00:19:59: Yes.

00:20:00: Is there some movement of the tongue, is the lips okay?

00:20:04: Is he free at the cervical spine?

00:20:07: because when a baby is breastfed it needs to move its head.

00:20:12: maybe He has an ectarticoli so he's not comfortable on one side.

00:20:18: So this are lot things that you should check and address Maybe before going to the surgery.

00:20:25: Yeah,

00:20:25: that's a good recommendation But

00:20:28: but the problem is that we have to do it really fast.

00:20:33: So sometimes you know our baby is born then you start breastfeeding.

00:20:38: Sometimes the problem will show up at five six days after birth.

00:20:45: and now The mom isn't pain.

00:20:48: Sometimes there's inflammation.

00:20:50: the baby is not gaining weight.

00:20:52: So it's always a stressful situation because you don't have like three weeks to address the problem.

00:21:00: so I think that sometimes they're trying solution.

00:21:03: They say okay, we are going cut the tangtai and see if it helps or not?

00:21:09: Sometimes i receive baby in my clinic And the tang-tai was already cut.

00:21:17: We will work on rest.

00:21:19: If they did the surgery and it didn't help, you still have to address all the other restriction.

00:21:26: And tension...

00:21:28: Can be bad for baby as well?

00:21:30: To cut their tongue tight.

00:21:31: do you have any bad symptoms?

00:21:33: so-to say

00:21:34: It always depends.

00:21:37: For some of them its a complete relief.

00:21:40: They had this surgery and then next day they're completely fine, you are going to take the breath properly.

00:21:49: For some of them it won't change and unfortunately for some of those because they experience a little bit pain sometimes their gonna change no way that drinking for few hours or days.

00:22:02: so sometime we don't have good result but always depends.

00:22:08: I would suggest if your mom is pregnant at this moment read about breastfeeding, find... some people around you that can help.

00:22:21: It could be one of your friends who experience breastfeeding issues, they can give you advice.

00:22:28: You go in Montreal we have an association where there are nurses or lactation consultants that you refer to if you have questions and issues.

00:22:42: so you must be surrounded by many people, a nurse or friend.

00:22:48: A lactation consultant and don't wait if you see that there's little bit of pain discomfort in the first day.

00:22:58: call someone.

00:23:00: make sure we have to check The position of her mom.

00:23:05: is Does she sitting properly?

00:23:09: Is the system to be comfortable when she's holding the baby?

00:23:13: is the baby in good position because sometimes we can change a little bit the posture of the baby.

00:23:20: So they really need help, They give birth, they put baby to the breast.

00:23:28: He's gonna drink like if it's completely natural but for some of them It's more complicated than that.

00:23:34: so If you have good advice right from the start

00:23:37: Yeah That is very good to do before.

00:23:39: Sometimes

00:23:41: The nurses are doing their best But sometimes they have their own experiences.

00:23:47: So they're going to give you advice.

00:23:50: You can receive different advices From a different person and this necessarily fits with you.

00:23:58: So, is that advice good for me?

00:24:04: Is it working?

00:24:05: if not maybe I should try something else.

00:24:12: but yet to have a good team around you and be aware of the first sign don't hesitate to ask for help.

00:24:23: And in my clinic, I'm working a lot with lactation consultants.

00:24:27: so most of the time they're seeing that consultant...the lactation consultant.

00:24:31: So she's gonna look at the posture of the mom.

00:24:34: The baby is the baby opening his mouth She's going check the thong thigh and he's feeding himself.

00:24:45: If she sees any issues, She's referring to me as an osteopath and I will look at the posture.

00:24:52: The mobility, the tension, the restriction To help both of them.

00:24:57: And we work together like that.

00:25:01: We have good results working As a team.

00:25:05: Yeah it is always best working in a team and seeing the individuality Of person too.

00:25:11: So what not recommended?

00:25:15: one-size fits all thing.

00:25:17: So yeah, maybe this could lead us to the next question.

00:25:23: You said you're working especially with very small babies but do also believe or what's your idea of?

00:25:33: What age groups need osteopathic support particularly often besides those very young ones?

00:25:43: You know, the way I'm working in my office and this is very like My personal way of thinking In Montreal.

00:25:53: I am teaching The course on modern skills acquisition in the first year since I would say Fifteen years.

00:26:01: so i'm really aware Of that?

00:26:04: The posture the movement in the First Year of the baby.

00:26:10: So For sure you need to see them right away after birth.

00:26:14: That's the best thing that could give a newborn baby, so between zero and two months After that if everything is going well You can check all of the mother skills steps.

00:26:29: So for example at four months he should hold his head properly.

00:26:35: He should move in every direction So you can show the parents a few steps.

00:26:45: Six months, he should be starting in this sitting position.

00:26:49: so as a parent do you see that your kid is able to sit properly and like rebalance on his pelvis?

00:26:59: To have us straight back!

00:27:00: Is it mobile in that position?

00:27:03: He's able turn to right or left does seem to be comfortable with new positions.

00:27:10: then he's able to crawl.

00:27:13: Like with both hands, with both knees is using his spine properly?

00:27:21: Is the able-to do that movement?

00:27:23: so when everything is going well with health digestion you can look at the mother skills understanding.

00:27:35: How is the posture adapting to that new position?

00:27:40: On their feet, they're ankle.

00:27:42: Their knees there hip.

00:27:44: so That could be great too.

00:27:46: see them like I don't know Like maybe three times in a year To see how the posture is adapting to all those new Marskills two doors new movement to those new posture.

00:28:01: So i would say for me two months, four months six and twelve months would be very specific time where I like to see them back in my office.

00:28:16: And if every step is completed the right way you have.

00:28:23: look for example digestive issues.

00:28:26: Does he poo everyday?

00:28:28: Is it easy for him to poo?

00:28:33: vomiting, reaction to the vaccination or like when they're falling.

00:28:41: They are hitting their head.

00:28:43: so many reasons but you have a few follow-up in a year.

00:28:48: it's really great idea

00:28:50: just always turning points as well.

00:28:55: and what is beyond that, it's because of the growing nervous system or what you are more like blockages on certain kind off the spine and maybe other bones.

00:29:11: I would say when i see quite often for example You have a little baby in your office with an anectar ticoli So head is inside bending with rotation.

00:29:24: so you can see him for example between zero and three months, everything seems to be good after a few sessions.

00:29:33: So the mobility is good ,the posture is good but we have to make sure that when that kid has got to be in next step against gravity on his sitting position Al's body will adapt to this new posture because it´s really big challenge be from the stomach position to sitting positions.

00:29:55: So sometimes we can see that, oh you can see a little side.

00:29:59: bending and rotation is coming back.

00:30:02: not because of problem it's coming completely.

00:30:06: but maybe there was still tension in new standing or sitting position.

00:30:15: so we just have balance body.

00:30:19: We make sure that there's no tension in a new movement or new posture.

00:30:25: because you know sometimes, like I'm seeing kids of five six years old and You can still see their posture as baby they had little neck tic-tac.

00:30:37: So do even can treat babies later so to say with four or five years without problem from before that

00:30:48: and then

00:30:49: you get it out.

00:30:49: or is it still persistent in the system?

00:30:55: Most of the time we can't get rid of this problem because its only a matter growing really fast, all the fascia, muscular chain are adapting very quickly.

00:31:09: So tension was there when he was born.

00:31:13: We address it as osteopath.

00:31:15: Maybe he was seeing a physiotherapist, maybe had to do some exercise and everything is quite well.

00:31:22: but you know in the body or tissue sometimes we still have that basic tension which will reoccur.

00:31:30: so if can balance our bodies later on then I'm pretty sure we'll get rid of those issues At

00:31:43: first at school, maybe?

00:31:45: Yes!

00:31:45: Thinking of my kids.

00:31:46: Yeah because you know

00:31:47: and a very challenging year for them it's when they're just getting into school.

00:31:53: so around five years old six years old...you know They were in kindergarten.

00:32:00: So there was playing a lot that we are moving the world standing.

00:32:03: And now their starting to school especially like in in in first grade where they started Read and write there are way much more in the sitting position.

00:32:14: So at that age, especially I think That it's a very good moment to say okay Let's do a little general checkup once a year.

00:32:24: And as i told the parents It's like its The same with your car.

00:32:28: you're gonna go through With your car to the garage Once A Year To balance to make sure that their direction is Okay.

00:32:36: We have to Do that with her body?

00:32:38: When you're going to start sitting, are they comfortable in that position?

00:32:46: Are they well-adapted to do the new posture?

00:32:50: so if we can release attention it's gonna be more comfortable as cool.

00:32:54: They'll have more mobility and flexibility.

00:32:57: then the posture will improve.

00:33:01: I gave a lot of exercise and kids at this age love doing exercises because they feel it in their body say okay yeah after my osteosession I feel more relaxed, more loose.

00:33:14: i'm going to keep that at home.

00:33:16: so you have five and six years old?

00:33:17: It's a very very challenging moment!

00:33:20: And teenagers?

00:33:22: yes

00:33:25: we talk about this and unfortunately...they don't come see us a lot And I think they have a lot of issues, but the teenagers are very fascinating to me because they don't complain.

00:33:44: They're not complaining enough!

00:33:46: Yeah i think it's all about puberty stuff going on and just finding... Not really well in their body, but we say okay.

00:33:54: It's because of your growing up and your body doesn't feel right Because of the hormones.

00:34:00: And then maybe we dismiss this.

00:34:02: yeah kind of because

00:34:03: there are some.

00:34:05: There're so many things happening with teenager.

00:34:07: I would I Would wish that they take care a little bit more Of themselves But it's very challenging period of time because you know when you five six or eight years old Okay, if you mention okay I have a neck tension.

00:34:23: I have lower back pain.

00:34:25: your parents will take in a Session with the osteopath so your parent is taking the decision for you and you say ok yeah I'll go all go.

00:34:36: And then you see oh i'm feeling better Teenager.

00:34:41: they are not complaining alot.

00:34:42: sometimes like that.

00:34:44: as You said there's So many things happening at The same time in their body.

00:34:49: I think they just don't feel it, because there's... It can't address that much.

00:34:53: Yeah!

00:34:54: So i feeling like my hormones are changing and i dont understand myself.

00:35:00: so My back pain?

00:35:03: I don´t care.

00:35:04: Like its too much information.

00:35:06: Don´t even say to mom or dad Because their just evil right now

00:35:10: Exactly.

00:35:11: But i think this should.. I wish They would consult more Yeah.

00:35:19: So, there's just one question popping up in my mind when we're talking about the breastfeeding issues.

00:35:26: and you see then teenagers they often get brackets.

00:35:30: yeah

00:35:31: so this is very interesting.

00:35:34: because um... They just get it?

00:35:36: And then you get a retainer.

00:35:38: You know It's same word with English.

00:35:42: Everything seems to be fixed until I got out.

00:35:45: Then comes back.

00:35:48: What do you think?

00:35:49: is it better just to see an osteopath as well?

00:35:52: because like a Retrograd retrognathy Yeah,

00:35:57: yeah

00:35:58: the same.

00:35:58: Yes Like when?

00:36:00: when mandibular?

00:36:02: Is not very growing enough for and then maxilla as Well.

00:36:06: so this is maybe something we could address as well.

00:36:10: Yeah And its at least one year.

00:36:13: they have braces.

00:36:16: Sometimes they are jaw tension neck tension headaches and Those one they are coming in my office.

00:36:25: So see good They're there coming because of the braces.

00:36:31: when I'm gonna address those though system so, uh-huh.

00:36:36: And i think an Over the years?

00:36:39: I realize and some dentists can probably confirm that when you're seeing a osteopath before the treatment and during the treatment, that the treatment lasts.

00:36:52: It's not as long at it should be.

00:36:55: everything moves really well And Really faster than if it should.

00:37:01: so I think its A good investment because like for example instead of having your braces For two years maybe You are going to skip a few months In a few month.

00:37:11: in teenagers life can.

00:37:14: really it's a lot.

00:37:15: yeah.

00:37:15: so before, during and after to balance the body.

00:37:20: And we don't necessarily need to see them a lot but see...see them before or to release all the possible tension to make sure that they're mobile their well-balanced in their posture then follow up

00:37:37: like

00:37:39: During the treatment, like for example if they have some adjustment.

00:37:43: you know with the elastic band sometimes You have to put more tension With the braces.

00:37:49: so maybe you can see them after Some big Adjustment.

00:37:53: To See how their body react and Sometimes say okay that kid is well adapting to The braces And That Kid Is not Well Adapting.

00:38:04: So We're Gonna Help Them to be more mobile and to adapt that change in their body.

00:38:15: What would you recommend?

00:38:16: More like hard-sitting braces or brackets, those things...

00:38:25: Yeah we call

00:38:26: it Invisalign too!

00:38:28: You know I'm very confident of the dentists so i will be part.

00:38:35: the decision is more on their side.

00:38:40: I would say that with Teenager, a lot of conventional races are more than invisible.

00:38:49: in Montreal The information i've got from the dentist They're more mobile, so they need a little bit more conventional treatment.

00:39:00: So we are doing more conventional treatments at the moment than Invisalign for kids and teenagers.

00:39:07: Yeah very interesting.

00:39:09: And it's funny that we're talking about the braces because when I'm assessing a baby, like an newborn.

00:39:16: I am always, always assessing inside their mouth.

00:39:20: Uh-huh!

00:39:21: I want to see the shape of the palate and I wanna see this suture...I wanna assess the suction reflex.. ...I wanna asses the movement on thong.... ..and i alway look at the palette.

00:39:34: Sometimes I told my parents just to mention you the palate is very narrow.

00:39:41: so we can work on that.

00:39:43: because if you work on the base of this skull, on the cranial spear and the cervical spine.

00:39:47: On the dura...on the membrane when you do what an osteopathic's doing So working globally for sure The palate could expand by itself If there was not a lot tension in the body.

00:40:01: but sometimes it won't expand as it should, so I always tell the parents just keep that in mind.

00:40:09: So maybe you shouldn't like check with your dentist to have an opinion.

00:40:14: because for some of them they're going to have a palate expansion at five six seven years old and you can have really good results only with that.

00:40:24: And i see that in my practice way much more those years than ten years ago.

00:40:31: and some kids will just need one pallet expansion, that treatment is done.

00:40:37: So even with a persistent maybe inflammatory stuff going on in the maxilla as well?

00:40:45: Yeah for some of them they can have really good results.

00:40:52: you're opening their face.

00:40:57: This is very interesting.

00:40:58: I think maybe it's a little bit out of the topic.

00:41:01: We actually wanted to do some other questions, but I think it's very important because that's something That's coming more and more.

00:41:08: Yes And even yeah having a lot of blockages here with the cranial nerves It's it's problem Maybe even with the parasympathetic system.

00:41:20: So how do you may be addressed for those kids?

00:41:23: The parasymprethetic system?

00:41:25: Do have any Maybe recommendations for the parents what they can do just to address

00:41:32: Would you say like more with like teenager with braces or in general?

00:41:37: In general maybe because we skip from very small to big ones.

00:41:42: So, yeah.

00:41:43: Maybe there's something universal where he said this is something that I always recommend.

00:41:50: You know I'm working a lot with some basic reflexes, what we call the archaic reflexes.

00:41:59: And if parents are listening to podcasts maybe they should go check information online about one specific moral reflex the reflex, maybe people will recognize it's a reflex when your baby seems to be very agitated.

00:42:21: When he hear big sound is gonna open his arms and start crying.

00:42:28: so its'a very normal reflex that we see on newborn especially around like two-four months.

00:42:36: And when this reflex is there it means that your nervous system is in good health.

00:42:44: So we need to see that reflex, but for some babies... For example if they experience a lot of compression when they were in the mommy's wound If there was a lot Of compression during the birth process Compression to the spine.

00:43:01: so sometimes you feel That the nervous system Is over excited so you can have an increase of those reflexes.

00:43:12: So it's the typical crying baby, he cannot tolerate to be on his back every time You know?

00:43:20: The parents are telling me okay He is sleeping in my arms and as soon I am placing him at his bed he wakes up and seems very nervous and awake.

00:43:32: sometimes its a moral reflex And I think that we can really work on that as an osteopath and then have a nice result because at the end it's all about nervous system.

00:43:46: We also have ways to address the nervous system in very simple way like if you just think of the sacrum, so when working with the pelvis or the sacrams make sure your sacrum is mobile... All the spine has no tension during the duration that every vertebra is mobile, there's no adhesion between the membrane and spine.

00:44:13: The base of the skull for all the cranial nerve... the membrane of the craniole sphere.

00:44:20: so we can address as osteopath to make sure you calm down your nervous system over-stimulated.

00:44:36: I give a lot of exercise to parents, just like advice because you know when you understand the anatomy?

00:44:45: You can give some advice.

00:44:46: okay maybe if you stretch your spine a little bit in a very comfortable position...you're gonna innovate that reflex.

00:44:54: so sometimes it's only little tips that will make a huge difference on the baby's everyday life and his parents' every day lives.

00:45:06: So yeah, osteopathic intervention...a lot of exercise!

00:45:10: What kind of exercises?

00:45:14: It is funny because this morning I was teaching and we were talking about the buddha position.

00:45:19: so it is way of holding your baby back to you.

00:45:26: So the back of the baby is against your thoracic area and you're placing the baby more inflection.

00:45:36: The hips are inflection, knees are inflexion.

00:45:40: he's facing in front of him...the arms are relaxed.

00:45:47: You know instead of placing your baby on left hip To make sure that your right hand can cook, open the door and prepare a meal.

00:45:58: You place you baby back to you And try to balance them from side-to-side instead of shaking up or down.

00:46:07: So this is kind little tips we give our parents as a steopat, and why are we giving those tips?

00:46:16: Because we know about the anatomy.

00:46:18: So we're looking at that posture of their baby And say oh That baby is a lot in extension means you don't he's pushing backward.

00:46:29: When the parents told you Oh yeah my new born He so strong!

00:46:33: He standing on his feet.

00:46:35: Yes but maybe it's little bit too strong.

00:46:37: Maybe His muscle tone Is A Little Bit High.

00:46:42: So he's not only strong, He has some tension.

00:46:45: If we release those tensions by our osteopathic intervention and if we work on the posture or exercise We can release a nervous system And they're feeling so great after.

00:47:01: Because you know baby is more comfortable He will sleep Well, he's gonna drink well.

00:47:08: He is going to gain weight and have less digestive issues.

00:47:14: So yeah that one of the tip.

00:47:15: but I'm a therapist who gives advice and exercise Because in our practice it's same for adults For everyone.

00:47:28: When i started my practice twenty years ago People were coming to see an osteopath And say okay lie down on your table, fix my body and I'll go back home do the same as i was doing.

00:47:43: yes that doesn't work.

00:47:47: So

00:47:47: you need to.

00:47:48: okay yeah you can lay down on my table but back home?

00:47:53: You have homework to do.

00:47:55: so you have to change your posture ,you have to do exercise .You have to drink more water !

00:48:00: You have to go for a walk a few times a week!

00:48:04: For babies it's they have all work to do.

00:48:08: And as I told my students this morning, and i always tell them like even if I show you the nicest astiopathy technique...the more complicated one!

00:48:21: If they go back home in a bad posture your intervention won't work.

00:48:29: so As an osteopath, you have your part of the job.

00:48:33: The parents are their own part and so everyone has to be involved in doing exercise at home.

00:48:42: it makes a huge difference.

00:48:44: It always sounds like negative.

00:48:46: I think exercise is just implementing how we live And this is what always our nervous system is experiencing.

00:48:54: Exactly!

00:48:55: So, that's why we have to do all of us even though it doesn't work all the time because we are not trained from beginning on.

00:49:03: but I'm totally with you.

00:49:06: My.

00:49:06: for

00:49:06: example if your baby has a flat head on his right side so since he was born she would be looking at him.

00:49:16: so the nervous system is getting different information because he was more looking to the right.

00:49:23: So even if you correct, the position of the bones... If you work on the membrane or mobility in your neck and spine when releasing the pelvis then you have to give that information.

00:49:38: Hey, there's something on the left side because maybe he never looked at his left hand.

00:49:45: Maybe it didn't experience and that age their nervous system is growing so fast.

00:49:53: So if you don't have enough stimulation You won't do this task.

00:50:01: If your looking to right from beginning You will keep looking to the right.

00:50:06: Yeah, you always get information out of that side Exactly

00:50:09: and your nervous system as a baby don't know That you should look left.

00:50:14: So we have integrate at home.

00:50:16: so when I say exercise Sometimes it's only taking position Being in posture.

00:50:24: It can be very simple but every day life And then see really great change.

00:50:33: Thank you very much for this awesome interview.

00:50:37: I

00:50:38: hope it will give some tips to the people who are listening

00:50:44: and

00:50:45: as i always say to my patient, we don't want a sale treatment.

00:50:51: yes

00:50:53: For all osteopaths have nice practice.

00:50:57: My schedule is full but We need to inform people that first we're not solving everything in one session.

00:51:07: Yes,

00:51:08: so sometimes you need two three four sessions.

00:51:13: Sometimes you have to come back a few times during the year To take care of that body.

00:51:19: So we said with kids and babies like different modern skills acquisition, but for adults or teenagers it can be like a different period of their life where they experience new stresses in life.

00:51:32: So take care of your body!

00:51:34: We take care our car.

00:51:37: we need to take care about our bodies.

00:51:40: Thank you very

00:51:42: much.
